What does annual maintenance normally cost?
Not “what does maintenance involve?” I want a number. Give me the normal range for year one, year two and a heavy-use scenario.
Which filters are changed and what do they cost?
I want part numbers, not vague words like “filter kit.”
Can we change routine filters ourselves?
If not, why not? Is it a safety issue, a warranty issue or just the preferred dealer model?
Are parts available through multiple channels?
If only one dealer can get parts, that is a real risk.
Can independent compressor service companies work on this unit?
If the answer is technically yes but practically no, that matters.
What is the emergency service response time?
A cheap repair next week does not help if production is down today.
What failures are common on this model?
Every machine has patterns. I would rather hear the honest version up front.
What happens if the unit is a lemon?
For a $15,000 machine, the answer should not be vague.
These questions are not hostile. They are basic due diligence.
The Difference Between Maintenance And Nuisance
Good maintenance is normal. Nuisance ownership is different.
Maintenance feels like this:
You know what needs to be done. You know when it needs to be done. The cost is predictable. The parts make sense. The machine runs better afterward. The service provider explains what they did.
Nuisance ownership feels like this:

Third, call at least one independent compressed air service company. Ask if they work on Kaeser units and whether they can perform routine maintenance on your specific model.
Fourth, compare part pricing. Public parts listings show that Kaeser-related filters and maintenance kits vary a lot depending on the part. Some individual filters are inexpensive. Some kits and specialty parts are hundreds of dollars. The point is not that every third-party listing is the right part for your machine. The point is that you need visibility.
Fifth, decide whether this is a service problem or an equipment problem. A bad local service experience is different from a bad compressor. But either one can justify changing direction.
What I Would Buy Differently Next Time
Next time, I would choose an air compressor based on support first, specs second.
That does not mean buying the cheapest machine. Cheap compressed air can become expensive very quickly. But I would strongly favor a brand and model that local compressor techs know well, with parts that are easy to get and maintenance that does not require a sacred ceremony.
For our kind of shop, the best compressor is boring. It turns on. It makes air. It gets normal maintenance. It does not require drama. It does not turn small filters into a whole production.
I would also consider having a backup air plan. That might mean a smaller backup compressor, rental relationship or emergency service option. It depends on the shop, but compressed air is too important to leave as a single point of failure.
